Do I Believe in God? Meh!

I am confused when I am asked  - if I believe in god? I honestly don't know if i do. As a kid I did believe in the stories I had heard and in the Idols I saw people worship. But, as I grew up my beliefs changed. I do not believe in a particular god anymore. I definitely know that there is a supreme power which could be called god or it probably is the power we all induce. How can there be a million variety of gods? Doesn't that make our lives more difficult? If there was an entity like god - I am sure he did not want this.

Gods propound religions and we follow it and preach it. Religion is something that is meant to bring people together - right? So then why are all the massacres in the world based on the differences between religions? Why do we want someone to follow our/any religion? Why do want to prove that our religion is the supreme most? Why have religions which instead of bringing people together and establishing love have only widened the distances and has created hatred between humans? Why do we want others to follow our religion - why are we after converting people to Christians or Muslims or anything else? Why can't we let people be -  let them choose, learn and decide?

If we were meant to follow everything that has happened in the history, doesn't that invalidate the whole purpose of our existence? I am not saying that one should not follow a particular religion - but I just feel there should be no compulsion. It should be okay to not believe in one and I am not implying that being atheist is a cool thing. It is not. All religions according to me teach the same thing - it's just that our interpretations are different. And, let's not be sure that we are always right - because we are not.

It is this urge of ours of wanting to be supreme that creates all the differences among us. Being supreme can be defined as not wanting to be like others and feeling superior. Why do we need to compete with each other? We all want to be better - shouldn't that be better than what we were before and not compared to anyone else? Our basic logic is indeed screwed up!

There are things about organized religion which I resent. Christ is revered as the Prince of Peace, but more blood has been shed in His name than any other figure in history. You show me one step forward in the name of religion and I'll show you a hundred retrogressions. Remember, they were men of God who destroyed the educational treasures at Alexandria, who perpetrated the Inquisition in Spain, who burned the witches at Salem. Over 25,000 organized religions flourish on this planet, but the followers of each think all the others are miserably misguided and probably evil as well.
